Native Montreal

Client:                             Native Montreal
Projet date:                 2017

The project imagines a scenario where the forms of native architecture coexist harmoniously and on an equal footing with the architecture of the Montreal’s colonial cultures.

The architecture gives a voice to the native population of Montreal to speak of its values and of its culture and links the generations of the past with those of the future.  The imagined housing development is in traditional forms, and embodies timeless values of community and care for the earth which sustains us, but constructed of new materials and using the latest knowledge of today the project reinterprets the idea of craft.

Opportunities exist for the indigenous community to be at the forefront of the discussion on sustainable development and to show the way for other cultures to follow. Some of the simple ideas of the indiginous traditional dwellings, such as the rounded forms that minimize the negative impacts of solar gain, the use of stack ventilation through the double height common spaces and roof opening and the design of the envelope that adjusts to the environment, are ideas that have been rediscovered in contemporary architecture.

The project was conceived in time for the World Design Summit and is part of the vision of today’s native generation to indigenize Montreal.

Cannoli shop

Client:                non disclosed
Projet date:    2017

Approached by a passionate developper who wanted to design the perfect space for his long dreamed about cannoli shop and who spoke about focusing on one thing in oder to do it well - the architectural response has been to embrace this ethos of singular dedication.  The focus of the project is the materiality of the interior shell and its sensorial link to the art of pastry.

One material and one constructive system shape the space.

The flexibility of the wood, which bends with the heat, and its warm color reinforce the enveloping qualities of the space. The honesty of the shell’s construction, which separates from its support structure speaks of the simplicity of decoration - richness is achieved from variation on a theme.  The functional and decorative aspects of each curve compliment each other.  Where the surfaces separate, they let the light shine through to fill the space.

Residential Development Concept

Client:               “KB Strelka”, Russia
Projet date:    2017

The project reconsiders the current  land use in urban centres in Russia and places greater emphasis on the private garden versus the communal yard, which is commonly neglected by the residents of the surrounding blocks.

The proposed design gives an opportunity to enjoy an outdoor space in the city the way we might currently imagine using it in the countryside.  Public space for an outdoor weekend market and a children’s park complete the public amenities of a neighborhood - a space that is typically occupied by a single mega block in Russian cities.
